The Powerful Signs of Red Cardinals
Updated: Mar 21, 2021
In celebration of my new website launch, I am sharing my most popular blog from 2015, which had been posted on my prior website. My true story about the power of red cardinals had received hundreds of comments, likes, shares, and encouragement. Countless hurting souls who were desperate for a divine sign had shared their own amazing stories of encounters with beautiful red cardinals, especially after the loss of their loved one or furry friend.
This is a revision of my personal experience with red cardinals, which started after my 13- year- old yellow lab, Samson, passed away. If you are going through loss, death, trials, or a broken heart, may this bring you hope and comfort.
It was November 6, 2015 when I was in the midst of grief and loss. My sweet Samson had taken his last breath the day before. It was not just any day. It was my husband’s and my wedding anniversary. Instead of celebrating with fine dining and romance, we kneeled together in a veterinary office next to our dog Samson saying our last goodbyes. My husband, Tony, has always been a masculine man. A construction worker who’s strong as steel. My rock during hard times. He’s never been one to show emotions. Yet, on that dark day, he openly sobbed as our lab took his final breath. Gently, I hugged Tony and wept right along with him.
A day later, I felt a bit robotic. I tried to stay busy packing up Samson’s dishes, toys, and his belongings. His memories were too fresh and painful for me.
Tony suggested that we go out to dinner since we missed our anniversary and didn’t go out to a fancy restaurant. I wasn’t up for it, but I sensed I should at least go out for pizza with Tony. I preferred to keep it casual and simple. Plus, what’s not to love about pizza?
In effort to apply my makeup and style my hair, I walked up to our bedroom to get ready. When I was alone, I couldn’t stop my tears from falling. Mourning my sweet dog, I said a silent prayer. As tears slipped down my face, I asked, “God, could you give me a clear sign that Samson is okay? Please reveal that he’s in a safe place.”
There is a saying that the Lord works in mysterious ways. On this day, He most certainly worked wonders behind the scenes for me. Within minutes of asking for a sign, I heard a bird singing. When I strolled over to my window to peer out, I noticed a radiant red cardinal sitting on a tree branch.
For over ten minutes, this lovely bird sang it’s heart out. A soothing lullaby. Instantly, it filled me with comfort. As peace washed over me, I thought, “Could this be the sign that I asked for?”
Intrigued to learn more, I went onto the internet to research the symbolism of red cardinals. Scrolling through articles, I was blown away by the accuracy of my situation. The one website shared this fascinating information about seeing red cardinals: “There are times when it may be possible for a little red cardinal to get our attention when nothing else can, especially in times of depression and grief. Cardinals can bring color and vitality into our lives. Their crimson color can remind us of the importance of ourselves as individuals in the circle of life. As the cardinal red color is symbolic of faith, so it can remind us to ‘keep the faith’ through circumstances that might look bleak, dark, and hopeless. You are a vital element in the circle of life and regardless of where you are in that cycle you always have the opportunity for restoration, revitalization, and renewal. The call of the cardinal can be used to gain our attention and lift us from our depression, our sorrow, or perhaps our ordinariness.”
In awe, I stood in my bedroom feeling overwhelmed. I was stunned by how the universe and the Creator answered a single prayer. One simple request. One moment frozen in time by a leap of faith.
Marveled by this incredible divine sign, gratitude filled my heart. I felt deeply thankful that God powerfully ministered to me during my sadness and loss. The truth is that there are signs everywhere. Miracles are real. They happen every day. We merely need to be willing and open to receive it.
Signs, symbols, and synchronicity can randomly cross our paths. They can turn an ordinary moment into something extraordinary. It can be a butterfly, ladybug, rainbow, doves, hawks, numbers, music, books, and even strangers who unexpectedly show up at the right time for the right purpose to comfort us. Each are divine appointments.
When we dive deeper into the powerful signs of a red cardinal, we can learn that a beautiful cardinal means someone in heaven is visiting you. When you believe beyond what your eyes can see, supernatural signs show up to remind you that love never dies.
To some folks, this may seem farfetched. They may not have ever experienced supernatural phenomena. Yet, it gives us courage to ask for special signs. Whether you ask the universe for something or you pray to God, trust that miraculous signs are not coincidental. Step out and ask for your own special signs and symbols to experience for yourself.
Today is March 19, 2021 and I still never grow tired of seeing red cardinals. Through the past six years, I’ve enjoyed these amazing sightings. It may sound a bit comical, but I actually nicknamed the male bird Fred the red cardinal and his lovely mate is Winona. What a hoot!
Five years-ago when I moved away, I had concerns that I wouldn’t see cardinals at my new home. Then something supernatural occurred. It was September 2016 when I returned to the workforce as a licensed beauty expert. I seriously thought it was my dream job.
During my first week at work, I sustained a severe injury to my back. My low lumbar throbbed. My fibromyalgia was flaring. My body felt like it was on fire.
Life gets messy. Sometimes, our hopes and dreams don’t go as we had planned. Unexpected hardships happen. You know what I am referring to. Job loss, broken relationships, betrayal, death, accidents, covid-19, sickness, and major upheavals in life.
What do you do during hard knocks in life? Desperate moments call for desperate measures.
Humbly, I confess that I had no idea where I was headed. I didn’t know what do with my life. And I felt lost. Silently, I asked, “God, if it’s Your divine will for me to write a fourth book, please show me three cardinals at the exact same time.”
Several weeks came and past. There were no cardinals in sight. Nothing. This appeared like a joke since prior to this I had constantly seen red birds flying wherever I went.
Stumped, I decided to remind the Lord/universe of my request to see three cardinals. I softly whispered, “I don’t know what You are up to. I am not backing down from my prayer. If You truly want me to write this fourth book, confirm it by showing me three cardinals at the same time. If I don’t see this, I will know that my book is not part of Your perfect plan for me. If three cardinals cross my pass, I will trust that it’s my green light to start writing.”
Four weeks later on a crisp autumn morning, I lay in bed doing my gentle stretches. The window was in front of my clear view. As I lifted my leg into the air, I spotted a male red cardinal who flew into my backyard.
Within seconds, a second and third cardinal soared into my yard. Instantly, I sat up, jumped off of my bed, and rushed over to my window. With my eyes wide open, I was stunned by the three cardinals meandering outside. OH. MY. GOODNESS.
To my surprise, all three cardinals flew into perfect alignment. They were side by side in the air. Right in front of my window. As if God was showing off and declared, “Look what I did for you! One, two, three; red cardinals in unison.”
As my heart raced with excitement, I had no doubt, this was my confirmation to write my fourth book. Wow! This amazing answer to see three red cardinals at the same time. It was beyond my hopes and dreams. What a beautiful blessing!
In May 2019, my fourth book, Sacred Wandering: Growing Your Faith in the Dark, was launched. It is a gentle reminder that no matter how dark or bleak your life may appear to never give up hope. To boldly ask for a clear sign. To trust in the universe/Creator to hear you and work on behalf of you. To remember that each sign, including beautiful red birds, are here to comfort you.
Today, I don’t know what you are dealing with. It could be a tragic loss, financial crisis, cancer, trauma, depression, unemployment, or death of a loved one. Or maybe a totally different situation that has you perplexed.
During these uncertain times, especially when it is loss and death, I pray for a red cardinal to cross your path. Whether it’s in your yard, the woods, as you drive down the road, or you glimpse outside your window, may the cardinals bring you peace, comfort, and strength for brighter days. For when you hold onto hope, you have everything. Have beautiful cardinals, other birds, or something unique crossed your path?
