The Power of Energy Healing for Your Trauma Recovery

Trauma deeply impacts every facet of our lives. This includes our physical health, mental health, spiritual health, relationships, and our ability to function on a daily basis.

According to Trauma-Informed Care, "Trauma results from exposure to an incident or series of events that are emotionally disturbing or life-threatening with lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, and/or spiritual well-being."

Experiences that may be traumatic include:

  • Physical, sexual, and emotional abuse

  • Childhood neglect and abuse

  • Living with a family member with mental health or substance use disorders

  • Sudden, unexplained separation from a loved one

  • Poverty & homelessness

  • Narcissistic abuse

  • Domestic violence

  • Racism, discrimination, and oppression

  • Violence in the community, war, or terrorism

Trauma-informed approaches to care, including relational healing, somatic embodiment, traditional therapy, and trauma-specific treatments, can help patients begin processing their experiences in a healthy way. It is a good place to start on your healing journey. To be seen, heard, and supported. Yet, what can survivors do if a traditional approach isn't effective for them? Oftentimes, the trauma recovery is trial and error. We won't know if a particular modality will work or not, until we try it. This could lead us down many unique paths. We may first consider a traditional approach. After six months, a few years, or beyond a decade, we may realize that we need another healing method. We may have hit a brick wall with therapy, counseling, or psychotherapy.

We may still have lingering symptoms of triggers, flashbacks, PTSD, anxiety, nightmares, brain fog, physical pain, emotional distress, dissociation, and emotional dysregulation. It doesn't feel good. It may keep us stuck in 'survivor mode."

Here's the one vital fact about being in survival mode. We cannot fully process our traumatic events and heal trauma if we are still in survivor mode. This is exactly why it's beneficial to have a "back up plan." To be open to doing something new. To try a variety of natural healing practices. Then we may want to explore a new approach. For some trauma survivors, holistic modalities are exactly what resonates with them. We may be open to doing something new in effort to experience effective results.

Trauma and Energy Healing

With abuse survivors, your trauma can be a lot easier to spot once you're keeping an eye out for it. Education and building awareness to understand credible facts is helpful.

You may have acute trauma, chronic trauma, or compounded trauma. Acute trauma may occur because of a distressing event. As a result of what you've previously been through (whether recently or years ago) your energetic system expresses a trauma response. In many ways, your body and mind are still in a fight or flight response.

Compounded trauma is when someone has suffered more than one traumatic event. For example, they may have initially experienced child abuse, which is anchor trauma. As a teenager, they may encounter another traumatic situation, such as sexual assault, which is another layer of trauma on top of the first traumatic event. Later in life, this same person may suffer a third form of trauma, such as being married to a covert narcissist.

Compounded trauma is an exposure to prolonged, repeated traumatic experiences in which the person feels powerless and severely threatened, or abused. When it's one traumatic event after another, such as interpersonal, relational trauma on top of sexual or physical abuse that lasts for years, it becomes compounded trauma. In some cases, the abuse survivor is diagnosed with Compounded PTSD.

Energy healing takes a whole-person approach to healing. You are not just a physical body. You are a soul living in a physical body.

Quantum physics has acknowledged that we are all made up of energy, as is everything around us. It is the most basic building block of life, but like the air we breathe most people can’t see it. Energy flows through everything and creates everything. Even our thoughts and emotions are energy.

This is why we really need to pay attention to our own energy and the energy of those around us. Protecting your own energy field is essential.

The mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of our lives are interrelated. Each will flow together to create the whole person. If there are imbalances in any one of these aspects, they will have an impact on other area's pertaining to the person's physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

When it relates to the trauma recovery, energy healing encourages deep relaxation and the elimination of stress. Energy healing promotes this from the inside out. It is a sacred spiritual practice.

A big gamechanger is that energy healing can calm your central nervous system. During a flight, fight, or freeze response, painful emotions are often buried. It’s normal and common for an abuse survivor to disconnect to themselves.

However, it isn’t helpful to avoid our emotions. We cannot heal if we deny our own reality. Therefore, we may give ourselves permission to feel our human emotions in order to recover. Calming our central nervous system will benefit us and each area of our lives.

Unresolved Trauma Deeply Hurts Us

Anything unresolved within our energy field (including abuse & trauma) will keep manifesting itself in our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual life, until we heal it. There is no escaping this. You cannot outrun unhealed trauma.

It requires each trauma survivor to face their painful trauma wounds. To step outside of their comfort zone. To try something new. To commit to their trauma recovery. By all means, don't stop until your healing comes.

Need scientific proof about energy healing? Dr. Yufang Lin, an integrative medicine physician at the Cleveland Clinic who is trained in energy healing and qigong, explains to her patients that energy is the foundation for everything we do with our bodies.

"The idea is that we have this bank of energy, and we have to restore it or replace it," said Dr. Lin. "In Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, if the energy isn't flowing well, we get sick."

Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt bad vibes from someone? We've all picked up on other people's energy when we say that a person has good vibes or negative energy.

"You can absolutely feel it," said Dr. Judith Orloff, an energy healer from Santa Monica, California, and a psychiatrist on the UCLA clinical faculty. Most of us have experienced what Dr. Orloff called an 'energy hangover.'

"That's when the energy of an interaction or an event lingers the next day when you wake up," said Dr. Orloff, "and it literally feels like a hangover."

A 2017 review published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine showed that when compared to a placebo, energy healing was more effective at reducing anxiety and depression and improving self-esteem and overall quality of life.

According to 2019 research published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, "Energy healing may also help people to reduce their stress and increase feelings of relaxation and wellbeing."

What I love about energy healing is that it's effective, gentle, and extremely relaxing. It helps to promote improved sleep, better health, balance, and harmony. The client only needs to be open to this awesome holistic modality.
