With a narcissist or a toxic person, no. This is how they intentionally hurt you. They repeatedly invalidate you, especially when they are maliciously discrediting your genuine beliefs.
Psychological invalidation is when a person’s thoughts and feelings are rejected, ignored, or judged. When you’re told to:
• Get over it.
• Stop being a drama queen.
• You are overly sensitive.
• It’s all your imagination.
• Leave the past in the past.
• You are crazy!
• Your trauma wasn’t as bad as you think.
• Let it go.
• You shouldn’t feel that way.
• There’s something wrong with you.
When you feel invalidated, take a deep breath and trust your gut instincts. Do not doubt or second-guess yourself.
There’s no need to defend yourself or try to explain yourself to toxic people who refuse to listen to you, respect your boundaries, and value your authentic emotions.
Despite toxic people who project their false beliefs and gaslighting onto you, have the courage to validate to yourself, “Yes, it did happen. Yes, it really was that bad.”
Ultimately, you know the truth. That’s what counts. Confidently, walk away from those who invalidate you.
Today, know that you not alone. You matter. Surround yourself around uplifting people who respect you and appreciate you.
